This book is part #2 of The Space Series and you can get the first book for only 3.99 right now. I highly recommend this New Adult favorite of mine.  If you like Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire you would like this one too, it has a sexy bad boy who  meets his match and falls in love and never stops fighting for her.  I got the pleasure of reading the sequel The Dividing Line before its release, which is February 15, 2013, and it was even better than the first book. So hurry and get your copy of the first book so when the The Dividing Line comes out you will be ready.

My Review

I was so excited to start reading the second installment of Lacey’s and Drake’s lovely love story.  If you read my reviews you know I love reading spicy, romantic and unique love stories that have you swooning, and I am happy to report this book will not let you down.  It starts off right where the first book story left off.

(Spoiler Alert if you have not read the first book)

Ok, the story starts out reminding you about some pivotal points that happened in the past, but very quickly you get sucked in really quick and wanting to know what will happen next.

The backdrop of the story is that Drake and Lacey are in beautiful Paris and Lacey’s career is sky rocking, but just like any coming of age story, there is conflict in what is next for Drake’s and Lacey’s life.  I love it when a story gives you both sides of the coin and you get both POV’s.

Lacey is sweet wants to be a supportive girlfriend, trying to make the right decisions.  And Drake – well, he is still sexy as hell and just wants to live his life the way he wants.  I really enjoyed seeing him grow and be a better man in this one. I also enjoyed the very steamy scenes that had me blushing while reading.

I am not going to say that this is a smooth sailing happy-go-lucky ride of a read, because there is a lot of depth and insight on real issues and real situations that this couple goes through – sometimes alone and sometimes together.  But in the end you are left asking yourself “what would I have done”?

The story was rich with culture and I like that Drake ends up getting a better since of self, and he did it on his time and his terms.  There were some moments that I screeched, when I thought he going to make the wrong decision, and some really good “what are you thinking” moments with both Drake and Lacey, which makes you want to finish the read fast. It was when I hit chapter 12 that I could not put the book down, and then in chapter 51 the story catapults, and there are some uncomfortable moments that draw you in and then it takes off to action packed adventure. The disruptions of the characters are superb.

You also get introduced to a whole new set of pivotal people in this story.  You ask who and what role do they have?  Well, I can’t give you much so I don’t give away the book, but there is one character that had me gritting my teeth the whole time she (oops) is in the scene, I wanted to yell, scream or shake Drake to open his eyes. I mean, she is part of the rest of the story and I was pleading that Drake would open his eyes the whole time – I mean the whole time!  Lacey also had some moments like that too but Drake’s really got to me. Lacey’s best friend is always there for comic relief and telling it like it is.

You’re a fucking idiot

I guess it felt so real too and I really fell into their world and wanted to read about what was next so quickly, so that I could relieve my jaw from tightening.  Yes, this one had me wanting to finish in one setting, and if that ever happens I am so happy as a reader.

And then there is the end of the story that had my stomach in knots and had me shedding tears.

If you ever need to talk don’t hesitate to call me; I’ve been there sweetheart.  I’ve been there.

I could not stop crying after I read this.  I know you don’t understand this line yet, but when you read it you will understand where I am coming from.  This was the moment in the book where you get it.  What I mean by that is you get why they had to go through everything they did, and you get why everything that Drake and Lacey journey was the way it was, and it made me realize why I love this couple so much.  In the end I got a nicely well-written, well thought of, and realistic view of what life and love is like for these two and the people around them.

Eeeeeep! I’ve been waiting for this book to come out and I am so excited to share my thoughts with you.

This is a story about Roxie and Griffin; Roxie is a college student who likes the quiet-no-drama kind of life, and then there is Griffin, who is a star basketball player at the same college.  Roxie and Griffin meet well before the story begins, but there was one faithful night that brought them together.  At that moment I was on pins and needles; I didn’t quite get where the story was going, in a good way.  I love being surprised about how the story and plot will go.  You know that feeling when your heart is beating real fast and you wish you could read faster so you know what was going to happen right then and there?  Because if you skipped some words you might miss a twist or turn in the story?  Well that was me at the beginning.

Roxie is someone I think a lot of people could relate to.  She was trying to find her place in this world, but yet wants to do something positive and be a good friend to people.  Due to her history – which you don’t really know at the beginning – she keeps referencing some secret, that is driving me crazy to find out, that would just destroy her reputation.  You can’t tell if it is an addiction, abusive family member, or some kind of small thing that she is just making sound like some major issue. Well let me tell you that when you think you’ve found out what the twist is, you realize you would have never guessed it.  Is it big?  Well yes, I gasped and blinked real hard a couple of times and re-read that part.  I still really like her at this point, but I really want to know how and why this happens.

So you go deeper into the story and the love development piece starts to begin and the typical stuff happens, but because Griffin is the star basketball player and Roxie a roller derby player, there are some not so typical moments. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that Roxie is in a female roller derby group that kicks butt, but like herself it’s not super popular at her school and therefore there aren’t many fans.  There are some really great moments when their worlds collide and makes a powerful message without even trying in the book.

There are moments where I was tense and pissed at some the things the ex’s and just jealous folks did in the story, but it made the story really juicy and showed in the end how smart Roxie and her friends are. I also have to mention this is an Interracial Romance (IR) with Roxie being Black and Griffin being Caucasian.  Normally I try to fantasize these stories; I always feel that in these stories you can picture whomever you want to play the parts in the books, and in a sense preserving the fictional characters and making the story what you want in your head.  But due to the fact that in this story race isn’t mentioned as taboo it isn’t pronounced and all about the story.  No, the story is so much more than that and if you are a fan of Scandal or Hallie Berry’s new show, you can see how the color of your skin in a story doesn’t change you from either relating to a character or getting into a story.  The story is fictional but reads fast and with a bunch of twist and turns and emotional angst that I love in a romance.  I give this book a solid 5 stars!

Book Review of Heart and Seoul by Victoria Smith

“Fantastic wrap-up of the series that will grab you in the beginning”

When I first had this book on my e-reader, it felt bitter sweet; I knew that Drake’s and Lacey’s story was coming to an end.  This being the third book in the series was a short story – which is going to be FREE on Smashwords February 9, 2014- tells the story about Drake’s and Lacey’s journey to Seoul to find his birth mother.

*Spoiler Alert: if you have not read the first two books, please go read my past reviews and read the books 1 & 2.

While trying to find his birth mother you get to meet Drake’s grandmother, whom I looove, and some surprising things about Drake himself.  There are some pretty tough history lessons and realities of being born in Seoul that come to light.

“It’s been interesting. I know I’m from here, but I’m still waiting for that feeling of home’.

But over all you get the warm fuzzy feeling of a feel-good happy ending. My review may be short, but that’s only because this book is sweet short novella, but every word in the book is the cherry on top of Lacey’s and Drake’s story.  When you finish this book you gonna want this series to not end but guess what I asked the author and she is planning to continue this series with – ohhh, I can’t say who, but yes, yes!!  This series is not over and I can’t wait to read the next installment.

Book Review

How do I begin?  I so enjoyed this book from the beginning to the end.  It had a fresh new base of a story line and I loved where it was taking me.

The author Victoria Smith’s writing style for the book was in both the two main characters’ point of view, Drake and Ashley. You could understand what they were feeling and why they made their decisions.  This book drives deep into America’s hot topics – dating, International adoption, and the stereotypes that come with it.  There are two Caucasian parents who are in high society and could not bear a child who decides to adopt a Korean child. Then there is a biracial woman who grew up with humble beginnings and lived in a single parent home most of her life. It has you asking yourself what would you do in these situations, or wondering how many people have to make these kinds of decision from day to day.

There are so many layers to this story that it is hard to pin point the turning points in the book.  You find yourself thinking you have Drake all figured out, but toward the end you realize you are sorely mistaken. Then there is Lacey, who struggles with taking care of her sick mother and has a hard time holding on to her dream. It is heartwarming that Lacey has a strong support system that does help her with her decisions, but you still feel for her as she goes through life making decisions.

There are parts of this book that made me want to scream:

“I guess they let just anyone join up here. Did your dad start a scholarship program or something?”- Ashley

.

“I am aware you hired someone, but I was not aware they’d be joining me for meals.  I don’t pay these people” – stopping for a second, he cleared his throat, “’The help’ to eat our food Madeline” – Mr. Drake.

I did enjoy reading these quotes in the book:

“You inspire me every day, Lacey. You get crap thrown at you from every which way but you don’t let it defeat you. You stay strong, and you fight back every time.” – Lacey.

In the end, I overall enjoyed the book. I like how there is an open ending to it all; not all the issues are resolved, it’s just what it’s supposed to be for their story.  I do know that the author is currently a working on a sequel – and the cover reveal is coming soon – called The Dividing Line – sqwee! (There was also a lot of “sqwees” in the book too) 😉 I was so excited when she told me so.  I would definitely recommend this book and when you do read it, I would love to hear from you and please leave a comment.
