I am a real life villain, truly. I drink sick amounts of Starbucks. Most of the time my hair smells like coffee. I was born in South Africa, and lived there for most of my childhood. I moved to Seattle just for the rain. Rome is my favorite place in the world so far, Paris comes in at a close second. I read and write more than I sleep. When I was eleven, I wrote an entire novel about runaway orphans, using only purple ink. I am addicted to Florence and the Machine and will travel to see concerts. I love scary movies and giraffes. I spend way too much time on Facebook. Meet you there?
First off, I want to say when I started reading The Opportunist, I first thought ok, I see how this is going to go; there will be some big reveal of some major event that Olivia is keeping from Caleb and he will eventually find out and all Hell will break lose, and somehow they will find each other and live happily ever after – The End. Boy, was I wrong; Tarryn took me through some things while reading! I did not hate Olivia, I just felt sorry for her at times; she made what I would call young and dumb decisions.
Meeting Tarryn Fisher was a breath of fresh air. She was as cute as can be and so curious to what I thought of her books. I told her right off I loved “The Opportunist” and felt her work on this book showed but I also told her that I did not like Leah and did not know why she chose to right about her in “Dirty Red”, the sequel to “The Opportunist”. I did not feel sorry for her or was even rooting for her like I do most lead characters of a book, but she assured me that I may switch my opinion of her if I’d just finish Dirty Red.
Now, let’s start the interview:
While doing some research I found out that you took 5 years to develop and write your first book. You received advice from people on your web site chapter by chapter and took your time on making a really well developed book. What made you go the route you did?
I think I might be taking myself a little too seriously? I just wanted to refine my art. I didn’t just want to put words on paper. I wanted input and the best and most honest criticism is going to come from complete strangers on the Internet.
When you finished writing your first book, you decided to self-publish. At any point did you send your book to publishers? If so, what kind of feedback did you get from them?
I sent my manuscript to agents and received the same feedback time and time again. Your characters are too villainous so I got on my manuscript for a few years. Worked on improving it and when the indie movement started I jumped on the bus.
When you wrote the second book Dirty Red, I could not find anything about you getting feedback from the readers, chapter to chapter; how did you write this book differently and why?
I think after you’re writing for a while you’ll find your voice. I just knew who I was the second time around and I felt confident about what I was writing.
I see you have Caleb’s POV, “Thief” coming out this year sometime; are there any other projects that you are working on and when are we to look out for those?
Yes! I am so flippin’ excited about my next two projects: one is YA and what I believe to be a completely original idea.
Andrea’s Book Blog believes in helping others help themselves; are there any charity or organizations you support that you would like your fans to know about?
I support Grace Place Church it’s not my church, it’s based in Minnesota but I believe fiercely in the work they do with the community.
