I always walk by the book section of any store, it is like a compulsion. This time I was shopping at Target when I saw “it”. Prominently located at eye level on the shelf stood “One Week Girlfriend” by Monica Murphy-I grabbed a copy. I read the back of the book:
.
“Drew Callahan, college football legend and local golden boy, is upfront about it. He needs someone to play the part of his girlfriend for one week.”
.
Ok, I was hooked and the fact it was 20% off the original price was a bonus. I put the book in my cart and continued shopping. I started the book as soon as I got home and completed it in one four hour sitting. It was a quick read and perfect on a rainy day.
.
This book starts off with a prologue and throws you into a moment in the future. This hooks the reader into the storyline. The first chapter finds Drew asking his sister, Fable (yes Fable is her name), to be his temporary girlfriend. So the reader gets sucked into wanting to know why he needs a fake girlfriend and you really don’t figure that out until you get in the middle of the book. I guessed at the beginning and guessed wrong, but it gets clearer as you read.
.
You go through a journey with Drew and Fable and see what happens through Fable’s eyes. Fable plays her part gracefully, but does not fully understand the issue other than her being a buffer for Drew. Her thoughts are split on taking care of her brother, hoping her crazy mother does not end up messing anything up at home, finding out the core of Drew’s issues, and why Drew is not trying to share that information. It is so hard to read through Drew’s thoughts where he beats himself up about his other sister’s death and how he feels around his home and home town. Everything about him is on edge during the book and there is one pivotal moment that changes Drew’s future.
I also wanted to take note that the author adds quotes that inspired each chapter. For example:
.
.“I’ve never dropped anyone I believed in” -Marilyn Monroe
.
Now that quote is very telling about chapter 7, it explains how Fable feels about people she loves. There are more statements like this on every chapter.
.
Overall this book was entertaining and had me on the edge trying to figure this mystery of what was going on. When I did figure out what was going on, it had me fired up.
.
Great news the sequel is out now and there are already two more books in this series slated to release soon. See below reading order…
