First of all, I would like to thank author Debra Anastastia for introducing me to this series and the author. When I went to NOLA this year for the Romance Time Convention I met this talented author named Helena Hunting, and after the convention I wanted to read her book. Well, this is the result – 5 star review is on its way!
This story of course introduces you to the main players in the book. The story centers around a shy book store assistant named Tenley and a hot tatted up tattoo shop owner named Hayden, and how they meet and deal with each others demons. This is a New Adult novel in which if you like Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire, or the Rule by Jay Cownhover, you are going to love this book. It has the angst and tension that builds at a slower but great pace, so you get vested in each character and their supporting family and friends.
I really felt for Tenley; she has this past that makes her feel guilty for crushing on Hayden, which made this book a page tuner. As the relationship developed, I could not help but think there has to be more. I don’t want to give away the book, but there was a part of Tenley story the wasn’t adding up and had me engaged throughout the story to find out what it was.
Tenley is in a league of her own. She is thoughtful, strong (yet she has no clue of it), determined, and a really smart protagonist in the story. I slowly started to root for her and her happiness. She really deserved to have something good happen to her and the story really drew me in; I wanted to find out more and more about how things would turn out. With all romance books I’ve read, I want to feel that sweet feeling of good karma coming to good people, even if it is a fictional book – it’s what makes me vested in the characters. With this story you are definitely feeling vested in Hayden’s happiness and her story.
Now for Hayden, the male protagonist in the story; the author does a Really nice job describing him.
“He defied convention at every turn, and it made him that much more of a weakness. He was not only inordinately gorgeous but intelligent and passionate as well. Beyond the hard exterior the brash comments and flirtation, a sensitive side lurked.”
There’s more description of him in the book.
So the sweet thing about Hayden is that you get this very unique character which is not what I envisioned a tattoo shop owner to be. I don’t know… but I certainly didn’t expect the sweet demeanor of this man. It was a nice and unexpected twist for me, but it still had me reeling and I felt myself really falling in love with the character. Tenley wasn’t a big ALPHA male caveman type, but he had a gentle giant part of him that makes you root for him and swoon at the same time. He isn’t perfect, but his story and his ways makes him an incredible human being and he has you talking back at the book at times, trying to give him advice.
Overall, both books need to be read together so that the cliff hanger from the first book is cured quickly. I can’t say enough about the surprise I felt feeling the emotions and rooting for these characters. I give this book 5 stars!! Pure love for this series <3
