Book 3 of the Crossfire Series (Spoiler alert if you have not read book 1&2)
5 stars *****
Woo-hoo! Gideon and Ava are back and we get to start from where we left off in book two. Cary, Ava’s best friend, is still on the mend from the ambush where Ava’s crazy stepdad Nathan beat Cary up. We also left off with Nathan presumed dead, and Gideon having to keep up the facade that he broke up with Ava to be with his ex-fiancé. Ava is feeling like she is walking on eggshells because she knows that Gideon’s the one who killed Nathan, and wants to make sure the cops drop their investigation on Gideon. Gideon can’t stay away from Ava, so what does an Alpha control freak man does? He moves in across the hall from Ava because he owns the building and it is a way to be close to her.
Ava is struggling to still trust Gideon and through the journey she reminds herself of states and situations in which he proves that he is in total love with her.
Nathan must have visited the Crossfire Building the day I found Gideon, freshly showered with a crimson stain on the cuff of his shirt. What I’d originally suspected was lipstick was Nathan’s blood. The sofa and sofa pillows in Gideon’s office had been skewed from a fight, not from a lunch quickie with Corinne.
Nathan and Ava are being stalked by a scorned reporter, and Ava’s ex-boyfriend rocker Brett Kline comes back into the picture hinting towards winning her back. Ava has to act like she has broken up with Gideon and Gideon acts like he trying to win her back. People outside of their relationship – even the close ones – have no idea.
When I looked at the story from Ava’s perspective, I thought this must be a tight rope she is walking. On one hand, she was still in a relationship with Gideon but, had to act like she was single and defend him when someone spoke ill of him, but not show she is still into him. That is why it had me not wanting to put the book down; you are waiting for that relief of knowing Ava can reveal her love life. I breathed a little easier when her father found out about Nathan. I thought ‘finally!’, I was now able to go through some sort of release of tension from my back because everything that happen to her horrified me as a reader – I did not get to go through the stages of grief for her. Now Gideon had his own demons he was working through, the nightmares, and the obsession of controlling and wanting to be where Ava was continued. Ava helps Gideon with his relationship with his sister, but not all of his demons are revealed in this book. There is a point in the book where I got upset. I don’t want to give it away, but there seems to be a communication problem in this relationship that drives me insane – could he have just texted her?? I mean, really…
If you have not read this book yet, you don’t know what I am talking about, so go buy the book – it is worth the read. This is a pick for reading after Fifty Shades for sure!
