Book Review
So, I felt I needed to read this just for the title; it had me laughing and also thinking ‘is this just a play off my coveted Fifty Shades of Grey?’. I mean, even the author’s name was played similar to the Fifty Shades author – E. L. James. At first when I read the title and then the synopsis, I was like, ‘what is this mess?’. I was advised by another author friend of mine that she had not read Fifty Shades of Grey (I said to her – bite your tongue!) and also that this book was super funny and I needed to check it out.
This author did a twist on what she thought would be Fifty Shades of Grey if there was a black girl as the main lead. Of course, the situations and some of the senses are not at all the same as FSG, but you do get a bit of Deja vu. I do like that the author was very clear and gave props to E. L. James, and that this book was a black girl version of E.L. James’ book. So right there I went into the reading with the frame of mind that this is homage to FSG.
I did laugh, shook my head and rolled my eyes a lot on some of the shenanigans that went on in the book. There are little one-liners and jokes the lead female “Keisha” said and did, but I do have to say that I was rooting for her to tell the lead character Tristan to get lost. I did feel entertained and did have the “what the heck” moments, but overall it was a fun read. Nothing heavy, just fun. I rate this book a solid 3.5 stars. Know that there is a sequel you can already purchase to get the follow-up read.
