He took another swig from the bottle, mentally listing all the reasons his life was over. First, no Eve. Second, his brothers were far safer without him. Third, he was the only thing he needed to protect his loved ones from anymore. So was he man enough to take care of the problem? Because he has no doubts he was the problem.
When I first heard about a sequel being written I was skeptical and wasn’t sure where the story would go. With Poughkeepsie, there were three story lines that pretty much were wrapped up at the end and I was happy about how it ended. There was the main story line about Livia, a psychology major who takes the train everyday, and Blake, a homeless guy whom you fall in love with – his kindness and his special gift of noticing the unnoticeable. Then the story spins out into Livia’s sister’s and Blake’s brother’s love stories in which each circumstance is drastically different.
As you can read from the synopsis and quotes, this book is about Beckett and Eve’s love story and how they both struggle with their demons. This had me thinking and wondering how Beckett was going to work through it because of that thing that happened compelling him to leave town for good. In the beginning of the story, you see where Beckett ends up and what he is doing with his life. With a whole bunch of money and no family to look over, he is left with hard decisions of what to do next. He is heart broken that he had to leave Eve and his brothers, but feels it is necessary so that he can take some time to change himself for the better for him and his family. If you read the first book, you know that Beckett was the foul-mouth brother who owned Poughkeepsie and did whatever it took to take care of his cherished two brothers so that they have a better life. He and his brothers are still protective and want the best for one another.
Then the story skips ahead FIVE YEARS later and you’re left to wish that surely Beckett did not waste all that time away… But you are quickly disappointed in him and wondering what happened to Eve. Well, the good news is that Eve is still Eve; she doesn’t really stray from herself in the book, so her moves and her actions don’t really shock you, and thankfully don’t disappoint you in the end. Beckett on the other hand has changed to a point, but his true nature always stands out and he uses certain vices to help tame his anger. Just like Poughkeepsie, the story gets complicated with new characters like a cop who is out for vengeance towards Beckett, and a crazy mobster daughter named Mary Ellen. When they were introduced in the book – which is around chapter 8 – I had to slow down and pay attention. Just like Poughkeepsie the story line starts to jump around and you need pay attention to what is going on. Although I do enjoy having lots of action and drama in my romance books, this one really had me lost sometimes, but I quickly re-read some parts and got up to speed on who was who and what was going on. There are some seriously funny parts that had me in stitches too.
We’re throwing a surprise party. Welcome to Your New Vagina party tomorrow. And I’m so proud of you, my daughter. I just want you to know that I except you, and I’m ready to make this change with you and support whatever you need to do.
The above quote had me on the ground laughing when I read it; I am going to keep this a mystery as to what this is referring to so you will have to read the book to find out.
Know that Beckett’s story is a very different from Blake and Livia’s story it’s not all hearts and flowers like Blake and Livia – this is Beckett we’re talking about here – he is all alpha male and struggles with his gangsta ways of dealing with things. The struggle continues in this story and overcoming them with Eve in tow. Eve also grows to understand herself and who she wants to be, but the action is fast and again there is a twist that you don’t see coming that gets revealed towards the end of the book. As soon as I read the twist I knew there was a sequel in the works. So if you are looking for an action-packed beautifully complicated romance story, this one is for you.
