This one I read really fast and almost in one sitting. If you like Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire, this book is for you. This story’s setting is on a college campus that is small enough for rumors and stories to be spread about all happenings. Both Lorrie and Hunter get their feel of the experience from the very beginning.
Meet Lorrie – a shy, yet tragic girl who loses her father and mother in which both circumstances are beyond her control, but she but she struggles with misplaced blame and how to move forward in her life.
Meet Hunter – a popular and well known student and fighter in the campus area. There is more to him than meets the eye, and his story unravels slowly. You don’t want to miss this plot twist.
In this story, the relationship between Lorrie and Hunter builds really slowly so you feel the tension. In the beginning, you hear about Lorrie and little bit of what she is struggling with. You can’t tell at first if she is suicidal or just really depressed. With that within the second chapter you get sucked in when Hunter and Lorrie meet.
I liked the fact that Hunter wasn’t who I expected him to be totally. I say this because I did expect him to be a womanizing, arrogant, alpha male type but you read on and it’s a bit deeper than that. I won’t tell you too much or it will give away the book, but Hunter’s persona is not what you expect.
The plot twist is what had me reeling; I knew there was something missing but this twist that comes is so original that I didn’t even guess it right. I fell in love with Hunter and felt protective of Lorrie, but nothing in the story gives you a heads up on the plot twist and that’s what makes this story so good.
Now, the things I had a little trouble with the book were minor. I felt that the tragic story of Lorrie and her reaction to those things were a bit extreme for me. It got kinda annoyed with all her panic attacks and retreating behavior.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and was excited to find out the conclusion. Yes, this story is differently not finished and I look forward to reading more about it to find out what happens with Hunter and Lorrie.
