Sparrow Fisher is transforming. No longer dressed up in antiquated clothes and ideals, she is finally trying on her freedom.
Before she moves to New York City, she meets Ian Sterling, a musician Sparrow has dreamed about since she first saw him. The attraction is instant, but their relationship isn’t so simple. Over a five year span, Sparrow and Ian run into each other in unusual places. Each time, Sparrow has to decide if she can trust him, if he feels the same for her, and finally, if love is really enough.

**** 4 stars!
The book starts off in the present time, then takes you back five years ago and takes you on a journey of this not-so-Love-Story. Sparrow (I love that name) is from San Jose, CA and a preacher’s kid who is beautiful and only 18 years old. When she meets Ian she has a boyfriend, but they both have a sudden attraction to each other. Ian is about 10 years older then her and gets reminded of that by their family and friends. Ian is a musician who travels from gig to gig.
You get to follow their ups and downs and their love story which is a simply written in the beginning but deceptive in the end. You know that there is a break up of epic proportions at some point because in the beginning of the book, Sparrow tells you that her and Ian broke up but you don’t know what happened.
During reading the book you’re on the edge trying to figure out, ‘oh, this is the time or is this the time’ that she breaks up with him. I have to say when it does happen, I did not see it coming; it was really sudden but at the same time you knew something was up – you just didn’t know if Sparrow was up for noticing it when it does happen. Then the break up happens, and you know the saying: you don’t know what you have until you lose it. Well, the author wrote a book that teaches you this lesson in spades!
Another thing I was giddy about in the book was that fact Ian took Sparrow to his home town in Minnesota. They rode on the ice and Sparrow was shocked and awed that people ride on the ice and fish. Because I live here, I knew that this author had to have either grown up in Minnesota or lived here at some point. I was so excited to find out that she lives here and she had the same reaction that sparrow did to the riding on the ice scene. 🙂
The challenge for Ian was to convince Sparrow that they were meant to be. Here are some of my favorite things he said to get her back:
Letters to Sparrow:
“To be released, To wrap himself inside you and know that he is safe.
From deep Ian
P.S. I beg you for your forgiveness, my freedom…”
“Little bird, our love has been hard-earned from the very beginning. It is more precious to me than anything on Earth. I can’t just let you go of it. And I won’t stop fighting for it.”
So the letters keep coming and because Ian writes music, you know his words hit to the heart. But will it win over Sparrow? Will it be enough? Personally, I wasn’t convinced, but as I tell my friends: if you are happy, then I am delirious for ya!
Big Question is: does love conquer all? That is why you need to read the book and judge for yourself.
