SPOILER ALERT
EXCERPT FROM INEVITABLE ACT II
I saw Juwaun waving her over. I took a sip of my drink. She saw me, I saw her. She knew it, I felt it, we felt it. She pointed to her empty glass. Juwaun nodded. I acknowledged what she was implying not saying a word. She didn’t come over because we were supposed to meet without the added company. Juwaun turned back around towards the fellas and the TV’s.
“You find her?” big brother asked Juwaun.
“Yeah, she’s getting a refill.”
He obviously missed the signal that I received and it’s a good thing that he did. This was my cue. I downed what was left of my drink. “Be back fellas, I have to get me another drink.”
“Go ahead,” Antonio insisted, “I’m sure you remember where the bar is.”
“That’s the first thing that I logged into my memory!” I said jokingly. I walked away, first calm and then more brisk. The faster I walked the more interference the crowd ran. They were like defensive linemen. I had turned into Juwaun the football player after receiving the ball, stiff-arming, jab stepping, and juking. They were good but I was better. The end zone, my prize, was eying me telling me to come and score. She had beaten me to the bar. I sped up even faster and was blocked by a defensive back with a nice backside.
“Kandi?”
“Hey baby! You missed me?” Just like that I was tackled.
“Hey!” That was my answer.
“I’ve been calling and texting. You’re too busy for me?” She caressed my shoulders.
“Yeah I’ve been a little busy,” I answered looking around. I was starting to wonder if this chick stalking me but I threw that out of the window when I thought of all of the possible people that she could’ve known here. “Do you know Antonio?”
“Um no, don’t think so. I came with one of my girls who knew someone that was coming.” I looked over at the bar. She had her back turned now. Her posture showed that she was waiting, not frustrated yet. I still had a chance. “Well I see you are in a hurry so I was thinking that since you live just a few floors up maybe we could–”
“I’ll let you know,” escaped my mouth and before I knew it, I had started the second down.
“You do that!” I heard fading in the background with all of the other noises. My target had looked back briefly again and located my gaze. I was only 20 feet away, less than seven yards from the end zone and then, tackled again but this time by a much larger DB. The fucking Lions had switched Juwaun from offense to defense. He was five steps ahead of me and had walked up behind Her and stolen my potential spot. I smoothly detoured to the left and headed through the patio doors. I passed the two lovers, friends, pals, whatever the f#&# they were. We caught eyes, she looked as if she saw my determination, and my nostrils caught her scent. My heartbeat began to come back down to normal.
